An interstitial compound made at high temperatures is iron carbide. It has a strong bonding power between iron and carbon, making it both hard and brittle.

Each iron atom is also shared by two other octahedrons. The coordination number of the carbon atoms in this structure is 6. Fe is the ratio of carbon and iron atoms as shown in the chemical formula. It's C = 1/2x6: 1 = 3.
